Project Concept:
My personal goals for the end of this project are to:
-Become a better songwriter and composer. -Become proficient using music software. -Improve my guitar playing and solo ability. I plan on reaching these goals by firstly putting a lot of time in at home to improve my song writing/music theory skills. I will be learning much more about the guitar to keep expanding my knowledge of the instrument. By doing this I will open up more ways to write song through using more chords, scales, arpeggios, to use at my disposal for song writing. I also intent to improve my technical ability to make even better use of the chords/scales/arpeggios which will help with my live performances also.
To improve my knowledge with the software I will be asking more questions to the tutors to help me in areas I might not feel confident with yet, and to also ask fellow classmates. I also intend to use my spare time at college to work on my original song using cubase. Regarding my guitar playing I will be using youtube at home for help with any theory or new skills, but first I will be using the knowledge of my tutors who are already incredible players themselves. This is something again I will be asking teachers more questions on areas I don't understand and to ask for more time in there to attain more experience.
I feel I have met this goal by talking to Marcus about guitar skills and techniques. I have spent a lot of time asking questions about guitar to Marcus and Phil which has made so many things clear to me, a good example is Phil spoke to me about keys and how to apply the correct scales to them. Marcus spoke to me about learning new scales, giving me a timetable on how much I should practice said techniques. I have done this and have also put in the time to learn more techniques at home by using youtube for guitar lessons. I feel vastly more confident with regards to my technical ability.
By learning the skills I have listed above this has massively opened my eyes to songwriting and I now feel a confident song writer in my own right. I have written a few songs since I have been at college which I am very proud of. Starting by having no idea how somebody can write a song, to feeling confident enough that I can write a simple song in a short amount of time is something I am very proud of. While learning music theory and my guitar playing has been the biggest help to me, I have also spent a lot of time looking up how other musicians write songs and by also asking other students how they approach a song. Doing this has widened my vision on how to approach a song. Since starting I had never used music software before, so the task seemed very daunting to me to begin with. As the year went on through Marcus's lessons It all became a lot simpler to me as I've learnt how to record instrumentation, adding effects to any tracks I record and also recording multiple tracks for other instruments. I have since recorded an original song I have written on cubase while at college and I'm very happy with the finished result. I have used many effects on the track such as panning, reverb, delay, and amp simulators. I also recorded multiple tracks for the song using acoustic and electric guitars, with bass guitar being the last. I definitely feel I have achieved my goal for this through what I have listed and my work I have done using cubase.
